Calories needed per day


How many calories you need per day, depends on many factors like whether you want to maintain, lose or gain weight, as well as various factors such as your gender, age, height, current weight, activity levels and metabolic health.

Following a balanced diet, An average man between the ages of 26–45 needs around 2500kcal(10,500 kj) per day to maintain his weight, and 2000 to lose one pound of weight per week without changing his lifestyle.

An average woman between the ages of 26–50 needs to eat about 2000 calories per day to maintain weight, and 1500 calories to lose one pound of weight per week without changing her lifestyle.

Calories or kilocalories ??

The term calorie is commonly used as shorthand for kilocalorie. You will find this written as “kcal” on food packets. Kilojoules (kJ) are the equivalent to kilocalories within the International System of Units, and you’ll see both “kJ and kcal” on nutrition labels – 4.2kJ is equivalent to approximately 1kcal.

Energy Balance Equation

> For maintaining a healthy weight==> “calories consumed/ day = calories burnt/ day”

> For loosing weight ==> “calories burnt/ day > calories consumed/ day”

> For gaining weight ==> “calories consumed / day > calories burnt/ day”

Here, I am giving you the estimated amounts of calories needed to maintain energy balance for various gender and age groups at three different levels of physical activity.

Activity levels – Based on physical activity, there are three activity levels.

*SEDENTARY means a lifestyle that includes ==>only the light physical activity associated with typical day-to-day life.

*MODERATELY ACTIVE means a lifestyle that includes==> physical activity equivalent to walking about 1.5 to 3 miles per day at 3 to 4 miles per hour + the light physical activity associated with typical day-to-day life

*ACTIVE means a lifestyle that includes physical activity equivalent to walking more than 3 miles per day at 3 to 4 miles per hour + the light physical activity associated with typical day-to-day life.
